Guide Tips

  • Please keep in mind that most New Yorkers walk everywhere, and that you may want to wear comfortable shoes. There will be a lot of walking!
  • Remember, this will be a fun adventure so travel light.
  • Upon arriving at La Guardia or JFK airport, please keep in mind the following:
  • A yellow taxi cab is the best way to go… you can stand onĀ  line for a yellow cab upon exiting the airport doors
  • A yellow cab charges no more than $45 to manhattan plus tolls, typically $5 (Beware of strangers at baggage claim who say they are cab drivers)
  • Yellow cabs come equipped with a Credit Card/Debit Card Payment System. The equipment is installed in the rear of the cab to provide a high level of security as passengers swipe their own card and are in control during the transaction.
  • Empty cabs have their numbers on top of the cab illuminated, while occupied cabs do not.
  • The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission has excellent information on all aspects of riding a taxi in the city, and links to the Taxicab Rider Bill of Rights. The highlights: air conditioning on request, free use of the trunk, and a driver that knows the streets of Manhattan and major destinations in the other boroughs.
  • Be sure to always take your receipt, as it has the taxi’s medallion number on it. This can really help if you forget something in the cab!
